Optical brighteners are, in fact, chemical compounds that, precise terms, absorb light in the ultraviolet and violet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum (usually 340 – 370 nm). Nowadays optical brighteners are very useful in different fields, more specifically, optical brightening agents (OBAs) fluorescent brightening agents (FBAs) or Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWAs). The light will emit again in the blue zone.
Optical brighteners are effective on their own; now let us examine how they work. They indicate a strong presence in certain colours. They can work in variations of light, Optical brighteners convert UV (ultra violet) light waves to increase blue light and reduce yellow light.
Optical brighteners can also make your cloths look whiter and brighter. These can cause a variety of problems, and optical brighteners have been shown to in some cases cause mutations in bacteria. Not to mention the downsides of this, unfortunately, optical brighteners are just one of the many ingredients that can be harmful to many laundry soap brands, so there are problems with that as well.
There are no frill-products of optical brighteners on the market, and one way is to use mainly oxygen-based bleach. These products are different approach without the use of optical brighteners. Instead of optical brighteners, clothes are bleached through a process called oxidation. There is also something to be said for covering stains on clothing. Do you know what is actually happening? Instead of covering the stain with an optical illusion, the oxidation changes the colour of the fabric and whitens it.
